Dorothy Englander's paintings are about advancing weather fronts and wind - driven waves, mighty sunflowers, memories and most of all about herself. " I really follow my impulses.... I don't want to be hemmed in by expectations of what to do next. The exploration of accidents within a roughly planned composition leads to the discovery of surprises that intensify and further dictate the painting or drawing process."
Using techniques of staining, scraping, stencils and impastos, she creates lush, tactile surfaces of repeated marks and patterns. She switches between representational and abstract forms employing them as symbols and metaphors to create duality between fantasy and reality, control and chance, science and romance.
Dorothy Englander's mixed media pieces include fabrics, paints, colored and metallic pencils, oil, gouache, silver ink and always some pastels. The sparkling clarity, the delicate layering is always there. She fuses feelings, materials and process. This inseparable relationship is the strength of her work. She works with originality from the heart and mind.
Englander has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States.
